Single vs. Double Cylinder Deadbolt Installation for NYC Doors
A single-cylinder deadbolt is operated by a key on the exterior and a thumb-turn on the interior — the most common setup in New York City apartments. It lets you exit quickly without a key, which matters in multi-unit buildings where stairwells are the only egress. A double-cylinder deadbolt requires a key on both sides and is typically chosen for doors with glass panels or sidelights where a burglar could otherwise reach through and thumb-turn the lock open. Both types are available in Grade 1 (highest residential security rating) hardware from manufacturers like Schlage, Kwikset, and Medeco, and our technicians will walk you through the trade-offs before we drill a single hole.
NYC building codes and fire safety rules add a real layer of complexity here that a general handyman may overlook. Double-cylinder locks, for example, are restricted or require specific configurations in certain occupancy types under the NYC Fire Code because they can impede emergency egress. Our experienced technicians are familiar with those local requirements and will never install hardware that puts you out of compliance. If your existing door prep does not match standard 2-1/8-inch bore dimensions — common in older pre-war buildings throughout the East Side — we carry the tooling to bore or adapt on the spot.
