What Goes Into a Professional Door Knob Lock Installation
A quality door knob lock installation is more than swapping hardware. Our technicians begin with a hands-on assessment of your door's bore hole diameter (typically 2⅛"), backset measurement (2⅜" or 2¾"), cross-bore size, and the condition of the strike plate and door jamb. In older New York City buildings — especially pre-war walk-ups common along Third Avenue and the side streets of Murray Hill — doors are often non-standard thickness or have been re-hung, which affects which knob lock chassis will fit cleanly without shimming or re-boring. We carry a full inventory of cylindrical knob sets, including Grade 1 and Grade 2 ANSI-rated hardware from brands like Schlage and Kwikset, so the right fit is almost always on the truck.
For entry doors, we install a door knob with lock rated for exterior exposure — meaning hardened steel spindles, pick-resistant pin tumbler cylinders, and reinforced latch bolts. Where a knob alone isn't sufficient (a common situation on NYC street-level units), we'll recommend pairing it with a deadbolt or transitioning entirely to a mortise lock, which combines a deadbolt, latch, and sometimes a privacy function into a single mortise pocket cut into the door edge. Mortise lock work is one of our core specialties, and it's the standard fitting on most commercial and high-security residential doors across the city.
